Helping create great internet video

IBC #2 – Day 1 Thoughts and best product so far

IBC is a huge show, over multiple halls and today only saw less than half of it! There were some very polished presentations from Adobe (although their comments on supporting IOS devices with Flash were at best misleading and when challenged the response was ” will have to check”), Newtek ( yes including Don and Kiki) and others.

The Newtek stand wasn’t that busy when I first visited, but was packed when I went back later. Perhaps the free beer helped? The 450 looks good and have some photos to post later. Got time to play with the 850 control surface….. impressive bit of kit!

Also had a quick play with the ATEM 1 control panel. Another nice product. When they get store/recall implemented and the SDK out it could turn the ATEM range from being just a great switcher to a more feature rich video mixing solution. They also said the Television studio will be shipping very shortly now that the 2.5 software for the ATEM range has been released.

It’s alway a pleasure to talk to the guys at Telestream and the Wirecast team were very positive about the feedback they were getting. They weren’t showing the Korg controller though! See IBC post 1 for details of the Thunderbolt supplied video they were showing.

Virtual Studios were a strong theme with some very impressive looking systems from companies I have never heard of. Many of them make the Tricaster sets look tame.

The highlight of the day was walking past the Atomos stand on my way out and stopping to look at the Samurai – this Prores SDI recorder with 5″ monitor is cheaper than a lot of small SDI monitors. This is definitely on my wish list.

But this was not my favourite product of the day, it was the newly announced HDMI to SDI and SDI to HDMI converters from ATOMOS. Like the other ATOMOS products this small converter comes with a battery and charger. It can also plug in to one of the battery slots on the Ninja/Samurai with it’s battery attached! However this product doesn’t stop there, also available when it ships in November/December will be a 2u rack mount option that can hold up to 6 of these converters!! Check out the ATOMOS website!

Updated: The Atomos rack mount unit for the converters is 2U.
