TF19 – Telestream Wirecast 4, Epiphan VGA2USB LR and an iPad

After the last episode we were asked how we enabled the iPad to act as a video source for Wirecast. This episode covers how this was achieved using an Epiphan VGA2USB LR.

Unfortunately this is a reasonably expensive solution and requires the iPad to be jailbroken to enable the displayout application to be loaded. This is required as the iPad does not output VGA signal except from within an application, and then only when that application enables it. Why Apple have not enabled this is unclear, however this workaround does provide a solution.

We continue to experience problems with the Epiphan when capturing video – horizontal lines appear on the captured video in some circumstances. You can get the latest on this by looking at the TTFN blog!

Great video, thanks! If you’re having issues with the VGA2USB LR unit you can contact Epiphan support through the live chat on the Epiphan website.

It’s a shame that Apple wouldn’t enable the VGA-out feature out of the box.

Thanks Victor. My UK a supplier is working with Epiphan to try and resolve the problem. Have provided all the requested tests and info. Hopefully we will find a fix soon. If not will try the live help, thanks for the suggestion.

What are the wirecast record settings you are using to capture the vga2usblr? How big are the files?

    Hi Chris,

the vga2usblr appears to Wirecast as a USB device, just like a webcam. Source is 1024×768. File size depends on what format you record in. You don’t have to use Wirecast, you can use the software that comes with the unit or other software such as BoinxTV. You can also use it as a source for programs like Skype.

    Hope this helps.

Will you be updating this now that there is the iPad 2 with VGA mirroring. Also, what was the reasoning/limitation for going with the VGA2USB LR vs. the standard $299 version?

Hi, yes will be showing the iPad 2 mirroring function.

In the end had to return the VGA2USB LR as it had problems with frame rates above about 12 fps. The basic version would be ok for still capture but would I suspect not be very good for video. There are some posts in the TTFN bog about the problems.
