StudioTech – Video Series: Logitech c910 USB HD Video Camera

In this episode we take a look at the popular c910 USB HD camera from Logitech. This camera has recently been given OS X support by Logitech. BUT don’t get caught out, this support is very limited as you will find out in the video. If you are a PC user then this could be a good choice for a low cost HD webcam, but for Mac users unless you want to just use the (limited) Logitech applications the camera only works in SD mode.

Hopefully this will get updated, but for now if you want to use applications such as Wirecast, iMovie, Skype etc you can only use the c910 in SD. ‘Nil point’ from the TTFN jury (UK viewers will understand this reference!)

Hi.

I just bought the samw camera and tried it on my mac book pro. I’ve also used a Microsoft camera with the mac and on both cameras I experience the same challenge. I get waves across the back of my picture. Did you experience that when trying out the c910? As I saw your recording by the c910 I suspected you used Windows? Didn’t get that in the podcast, so I ask now.

Thanks.

Hi Felix, have not had the problem with waves on the picture, don’t know what could be causing that.

The c910 video was recorded on the Mac using the Logitech Webcam software in widescreen Large:720p setting. The software is not that good as it has no controls over camera!

Hi Mark,

I use two C910 here with some ok results with Wirecast 4.0. I’ve used the color filters in Wirecast to do some color correction and it works well to my surprise.

I also stopped by the Logitech office in Hsinzhu, Taiwan and spoke to the tech people their and it didn’t sound like they are interested in providing better support for the Mac. How sad…

Hi James, thanks for posting a comment.

The c910 does give good results in Wirecast as an SD camera. The wide angle can be very useful especially and low light performance is quite good. Such a shame that Logitech are not interested in fixing the problems with the drivers and allowing users to take full advantage of the capabilities of the camera.

I read in the wirecast forums they were planing to add support for Logitech C910 High Definition in a future update. Nice!
