TF18 – Telestream Wirecast 4 and the Korg nanoKontrol

Telestream recently released a new version of their ‘tv studio’ software, Wirecast version 4, and we have just used it for on another podcast (A House in France). It worked well and we continue to experiment with it.

Like all similar solution, when using Wirecast and appearing ‘on camera’ at the same time, it quickly becomes apparent that without a ‘producer’ to move the mouse and tap the keys getting a professional switch between shots was challenging. To simplify the switching other solutions provide a dedicated control device.

Searching the Wirecast documentation and forums it is clear that there is no readily available USB controller but some people have had some success using the Korg nanoKontrol. This is an inexpensive (c £30 / $50) midi controller designed for use with music software:

This Techcast Focus episode, and the accompanying files, provide an easy to follow tutorial on what you need to do to get up and running with Wirecast and a Korg nanoKontrol.

UPDATE 15 December 2010 – Randall Bennett has created and published an alternative set up today. This follows from his YouTube video from 2009 which was one of the sources that pointed me in the right direction to get this working. You can check out the post at VidPlusPlus.

Good luck!

Great tutorial. The “secret” question is how are you getting the iPad screen in to Wirecast? Developer tool iPad simulator to Desktop Presenter? Something else?

    Thanks Craig.

The iPad is connected via an Epiphan VGA2USB LR. Unfortunately you have to jailbreak the iPad and install the Displayout app (via Cydia) to get the video enabled from the dock connector. The other downside is that the Epiphan uses a fair amount of CPU. Noticed after I had recorded the episode that the frame rate had dropped in Wirecast as a result of this. One option would be to put it on another machine and use desktop presenter to capture the screen.

Have been having problems with the Epiphan which are documented on the blog (www.ttfn.tv/ttfn), there may be a problem with the mark II version which I have.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU! for making this available to the public. I’ve been after telestream since I first received wirecast that they need a hardware controller. Now you have made it possible and the tutorial is flawless! Thanks for sharing your hard work and making broadcasters like myself take their show to even a higher level. I received my Korg this evening and went upstairs and set it up. Within 10 minutes it was working and I was switching. I will be telling everyone that uses a mac and wants a hardware switcher about your site! Thanks again!
